Background & Approach
Baltimore City is in north-central Maryland and is home to the Baltimore Pretrial Complex, which is overseen by the Maryland Department of Public Safety’s Division of Pretrial Detention and Services. The city convened a project advisory group to design and implement a data dashboard that integrates data from various criminal justice sources to monitor the pretrial population in the Baltimore City Pretrial Complex in order to identify candidates for pretrial release, expedited case processing, and specialized programming. The city has also facilitated conversations with community groups to provide additional perspectives in thinking about how to make the local justice system more fair and equitable. Baltimore City continues to engage with the Safety and Justice Challenge Network to rethink and redesign its criminal justice system so that it is more fair, just, and equitable for all.
